Ukrainian Retro: Live music and talk

For the first time, Ukrainian musician, journalist and researcher of Ukrainian retro Albert Tsukrenko is coming to Ukraine House in Denmark — bringing the music, stories and first-hand experiences behind decades of Ukrainian popular culture.

On 20 November, Albert presents his new project ALBERTZ UKRENKO, combining research, storytelling and live music to explore Ukrainian popular music and the society that shaped it.

At the centre of the evening is his lecture “65 Years in an Hour: A History of Mistakes in Ukrainian Popular Music.” Moving from the Ukrainian SSR to independent Ukraine, Albert explores how the pop scene looked, sounded and changed, and what the music people listened to can tell us about different periods of Ukrainian society, culture and identity.

Albert brings a unique perspective to this history. As a musician himself, a member of Khamerman Znyshchuye Virusy (Hammerman Destroys Viruses) and a long-time researcher of Ukrainian popular culture, he combines years of research with personal experience of the cultural landscape he explores.

His previous work includes the award-winning projects UnZip and Russification in Pop Style, as well as Old School Ukrainian Funk, created together with the Ukrainian retro band MOVA.

Join us for Albert Tsukrenko’s first visit to Ukraine House and experience Ukrainian retro through the music, stories and memories behind it. 🇺🇦🎵
