Film Fridays

Through a curated selection of feature films, documentaries, and shorts, Film Fridays invite the Danish and international public into the rich and complex narratives of Ukrainian history, identity, resistance, and art. The strength of Film Fridays lies in its intentional dialogue with contemporary Ukrainian cinema. Screenings are often followed by Q&As or open forums with filmmakers, cultural figures, or critics, creating opportunities for audiences to engage directly with the stories and perspectives they see on screen. Films such as Yours Vasyl, Pamfir, Carol of the Bells, Winter on Fire, Slovo House: Unfinished Novel, and Culture vs. War have challenged audiences to reconsider the historical and cultural narratives surrounding Ukraine.

The pinnacle of the cinematic program at the Ukraine House was the screening of the Academy Award-winning documentary "20 Days in Mariupol" by Mstyslav Chernov. Presented in partnership with the U.S. Embassy in Denmark, the Ukrainian Embassy, and Nordisk Film, the screening brought together an audience of over 300 people at Nordisk Biografer Palads. The event demonstrated that cinema is not just entertainment; it is memory, protest, education – and in the context of war, an act of survival.

A key highlight of the cinema programming in 2025 has been Ukraine House's continued collaboration with the Ukrainian Institute and CPH:DOX, Scandinavia's largest and most influential international documentary film festival. This year, four powerful Ukrainian documentaries were featured as part of the festival's official selection, including "2000 Meters to Andriivka" by Oscar-winning director Mstyslav Chernov and "My Dear Théo" by Alisa Kovalenko. On March 23, Ukraine House hosted a special reception in honor of My Dear Théo's premiere and all Ukrainian filmmakers.
