Ukrainian Straw Spider Workshop

🌾 Join us for a cozy December night crafting the Christmas spider, a traditional Ukrainian ornament made of straw.

The pavuk—or “spider”—was hung from ceiling beams or windows to bring luck and prosperity to the home. Light as air, it moves gently with every breath of wind, casting beautiful shadows that resemble a web, hence the name.

In Ukrainian homes of the past, families saved the best stalks from the harvest to weave didukhs, angels, and spiders during the quiet winter evenings. Today, this craft is being lovingly revived—a return to simple earth materials and the warmth of tradition.

At the workshop, you will:
🔹 Learn the story and symbolism behind the pavuk
🔹 Work with natural straw and traditional weaving methods
🔹 Create your own straw spider to adorn your home this Christmas

Expect to enjoy a calm, meditative rhythm of this timeless craft and share it with others. We can offer only a small team workshop, so don’t wait until it sells out!

Malanka and Christmas. Documentary film screening
Before Christmas, come for a special screening of “Malanka and Christmas” — a documentary that captures two powerful moments in Ukraine’s recent history: the celebration of Malanka just one month before the full-scale Russian invasion, and the first Christmas in the newly de-occupied territories of Slobozhanshchyna and Donechchyna.
