Malanka and Christmas. Documentary film screening

Before Christmas, come for a special screening of “Malanka and Christmas” — a documentary that captures two powerful moments in Ukraine’s recent history: the celebration of Malanka just one month before the full-scale Russian invasion, and the first Christmas in the newly de-occupied territories of Slobozhanshchyna and Donechchyna.
The film follows Dmytro Mazuriak — Ukrainian musician, sopilka player with the band Kazka, and a dedicated guardian of the Malanka tradition in his home village of Ispas, Bukovyna. For 15 years, Dmytro has returned from Kyiv each winter to organise the local Malanka festival and craft traditional Hutsul instruments. Just weeks after the 2022 celebration, the invasion began.
Later that same year, as Ukrainian forces liberated the east, life there remained harsh under constant shelling. To bring light, solidarity, and ancient traditions back to these communities, young people from across Ukraine travelled to perform nativity scenes — offering warmth and hope in the midst of winter.
