Literary Programming: Coffee with Malanchuk

The Book Club “Coffee with Malanchuk” series blends literary exploration and author engagements to deepen civic engagement and solidarity between Ukraine and Denmark. Named in honor of the Kierkegaard scholar, professor of the University of Copenhagen of Ukrainian descent Hryhoriy Malanchuk, the program regularly hosts book presentations bringing acclaimed Ukrainian writers to Denmark for readings, discussions, and book signings. Ukrainian and international authors who have presented their work at Ukraine House include the award-winning foreign correspondent of The Guardian Luke Harding, Ukrainian children's author Kateryna Yegorushkina, culture expert Nadiyka Gerbish, poets Yulia Musakovska and Pavlo Korobchuk, the award-winning and the most translated Ukrainian author Andriy Kurkov, Ukraine's most renowned historian Serhii Plokhy and many others.

Notable presentations include:

"The Language of War" by Oleksandr Mykhed Ukraine House welcomed soldier‐writer Oleksandr Mykhed for an in‐depth presentation of his wartime diary. In this raw, first‐person account, Mykhed chronicles the opening months of the full-scale invasion – his evacuation from occupied territories, frontline service, and grassroots solidarity. Over 60 attendees engaged in a candid conversation moderated by the prominent Ukrainian philosopher Vakhtang Kebuladze about memory, trauma, and the writer's duty to bear witness.

"Drabyna" (The Ladder) by Eugenia Kuznetsova Award-winning author Eugenia Kuznetsova joined for the Danish debut of Drabyna (The Ladder), recently named BBC Book of the Year 2023. The novel's protagonist, Tolik, confronts family estrangement and displacement, prompting attendees to consider how literature can illuminate the private struggles that underlie war.

"Bakhmut" by Myroslav Laiuk Ukraine House hosted a presentation of Bakhmut, a reportage and essay collection documenting the fierce winter battles of 2023. Accompanied by photographer Danylo Pavlov's frontline images, Laiuk's prose captures the valor of Ukrainian soldiers and the plight of civilians trapped in combat zones.
