Anniversaries

Each year, Ukraine House commemorates the Revolution of Dignity with civic dialogues bringing together scholars, activists, and cultural thinkers. In February 2023, the opening forum featured Serhii Plokhy for a keynote "The Battle for Ukraine: What History Can Foretell about the Outcome of the Current War" and discussion on "The Role of Culture for the Resilience of Democratic Ukraine and Europe." In November 2023, marking ten years since the uprising, philosopher Volodymyr Yermolenko and culture expert Tetyana Ogarkova reflected on the moral and intellectual legacy of the Maidan generation.
Towards 1000 days since the start of the full-scale invasion Ukraine House organized a series of discussions involving the leadership of the World Congress of Ukrainians Paul Grod, Ukrainian philosophers Volodymyr Yermolenko, Vakhtang Kebuladze, as well as literary critic and Princeton scholar Tamara Hundorova in reflecting on the role of global Ukrainians for Ukraine's victory. In partnership with Rasmussen Global, we also organized a session involving experts from the leading Danish think tanks and societies, including Think Tank Europa and the Danish Foreign Policy Society to discuss scenarios and actions to ensure sustainable peace in Europe.
On the anniversaries of Russia's full-scale invasion, Ukraine House curates multi-day programs of critical reflection and international policy dialogue. On 24 February 2025, "Voices of Dignity" featured powerful testimony by human rights journalist Maksym Butkevych, recently returned from captivity. The following day, Ukraine House co-hosted "Russia's Aggression and Europe's Response: A Critical Crossroad" with the Danish Foreign Policy Society, featuring an international renowned foreign policy and international security expert Edward Lucas, the chairman of the foreign policy committee of the Danish parliament Michael Aastrup Jensen, Ukrainian poet Yaryna Chornohuz, and human rights activist and former prisoner of war Maksym Butkevych.
Annually, Ukraine House in Denmark commemorates the Holodomor with a powerful blend of public education, cultural programming, and civic advocacy, honoring the memory of millions of Ukrainians starved by Stalin’s regime. Through curated exhibitions, literary readings, public discussions, and awareness campaigns, UHD sheds light on this genocide as a foundational trauma of Ukrainian history and a crucial lens for understanding today’s war. In partnership with Danish institutions, we foster reflection on historical justice and cultural erasure, while calling for broader recognition of the Holodomor as a crime against humanity – ensuring that this chapter of Ukraine’s past is neither forgotten nor repeated.
On April 27, 2025, Serhii Plokhii joined Ukraine House for a high-level public lecture titled "Chornobyl: From Exclusion Zone to War Zone," timed to coincide with the anniversary of the Chornobyl disaster and ensure that we all reflect and learn from this catastrophe.
