Taras Shevchenko for Contemporary Times

Taras Shevchenko, a Ukrainian poet, artist, and thinker is often regarded as the founding figure of modern Ukrainian culture. His writings on freedom, dignity, and justice shaped Ukraine’s intellectual tradition and continue to resonate powerfully today, particularly in the context of Russia’s war against Ukraine.

During the discussion, speakers will explore how Shevchenko can be read and understood today, and how his legacy continues to influence contemporary culture and intellectual debate.

The conversation will feature two speakers joining online:

George G. Grabowicz (Harvard Ukrainian Studies) will speak in the context of his forthcoming academic book on Shevchenko. His talk will reflect on the intellectual challenges facing Ukrainian studies today and how Russia’s war against Ukraine pushes scholars to reassess established approaches and assumptions within Shevchenko studies.

Olena Haleta, a literary critic, culturologist, poet, and translator, will discuss Shevchenko’s presence in contemporary culture. Her work engages with Shevchenko in relation to modernism, and in this talk she will reflect on how the poet’s legacy continues to appear and evolve in modern cultural discourse.
