Bread and War: Past Lessons to Protect the Future

Ukraine House, together with @ukrindnk and @aud_denmark, is hosting a meaningful afternoon in commemoration of the Day of Holodomor Remembrance. Join us as we come together to honour the victims of Soviet crimes against humanity, as well as learn from history.

We will begin with introductions by our Chairperson, Nataliya Popovych, the Ambassador of Ukraine to the Kingdom of Denmark, Andrii Yanevskyi, as well as Oleksii Kopylov, the head of the Association of Ukrainians in Denmark, followed by the ecumenical prayer led by Father Vasyl Tykhovych of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church and other invited religious leaders in Denmark. It will be followed by the communal lighting of the candles in solidarity with the millions of Ukrainians who died and suffered from the USSR’s man-made famines.

Ukrainian historian Daria Mattingly (University of Cambridge), a leading expert on the perpetrators of the Holodomor and the social machinery behind the famine, will provide the historical context.

She will then be joined by Felicity Spector, UK journalist and author of “Bread & War: A Ukrainian Story of Food, Bravery and Hope”, who will share human-centred stories from her recent experience of traveling to Ukraine and supporting the Bake for Ukraine movement that brings freshly baked bread to people at the frontline territories; and Vakhtang Kebuladze, Ukrainian philosopher, writer, professor at Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv and member of PEN Ukraine who will reflect on the memory of Holodomor and what it means for Ukraine’s present and future. We will address how societies live with and overcome trauma, how remembrance shapes civic courage and volunteering, and what moral responsibilities all Europeans share today.
