Accountability Nexus between Ukraine and Syria

More than four years since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, and amidst Syria's transition after the ousting of the Assad regime, calls for justice for victims in both countries are more critical than ever.
The two contexts have many threads in common, not least the role of Russia and Russian forces, including in war crimes and crimes against humanity. Human rights and civil society actors in both countries and worldwide have led relentless efforts to document atrocities, preserve evidence and take concrete actions towards establishing truth and justice. How can those efforts be aligned? What synergies can be achieved between them? And how can we work and support each other in the pursuit of justice?
Ukraine House in Denmark, along with the Syrian Archive and Action for Sama, invite you to a panel discussion engaging around those topics. Speakers from Syrian and Ukrainian civil society organisations will address the questions of parallels and similarities between Ukraine and Syria, as well as potential pathways for collective actions towards achieving justice and holding common perpetrators to account.
Panelists:
Nadia Volkova, founder and Director of the Ukrainian Legal Advisory Group (ULAG), and Ukrainian Archive Legal Advisor
Waad Al-Kateab, Syrian film maker and co-founder of Action for Sama
Yulia Kyrpa, board member of Register of Damages for Ukraine
Jelnar Ahmad, Syrian Archive Program Manager
Moderator: Ivan M. Nielsen, fmr Danish Special Representative for the Syria Crisis
Date: 11 May 2026
Time: 16:30-18:00 CET
