Cyanotype Workshop: An Introduction to the Technique

The workshop will be guided by Ukrainian artist Iryna Gvozdyk.
Created in 1842, cyanotype transforms light, water, and iron-based solutions into deep blue prints. Long before digital photography, it was used to capture plants, and everyday objects. The British botanist Anna Atkins became one of the first artists to turn the process into something poetic and created what is considered the world’s first photobook through cyanotype prints of algae and plants.
During the workshop, Iryna Gvozdyk will introduce participants to the technique and guide us through the process of working with exposing images under UV light and developing prints by hand.
Materials including herbarium samples, negatives, and paper will be provided, alongside a selection of printed images – among them views of Copenhagen and archival photographs. Each participant will leave with their own unique blue prints.
